Fibre to the Home Trial

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 @ 06:05 PM Author: ONE

ONE is making bold new moves into next generation broadband services by setting up a trial of super-fast Fibre-to-the-home broadband services, which will take place starting May this year in Point Cook, Victoria.

Through a partnership with Telstra, ONE will deliver high-speed internet over Optical Fibre cables that will be installed in select housing estates within the suburb.

It is estimated that up to 1600 homes in Point Cook will be eligible to take part in the trial, with broadband access speeds of 100 Megabits down and 5 Megabits up.

At that speed, Fibre is capable of speeds more than four times faster than existing ADSL2+, however the distinct advantage that fibre has over ADSL broadband is signal loss and electro-magnetic interference which is a major factor in ADSL technology is almost non-existent in Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Broadband. On an ADSL2+ service, only a minority of subscribers will ever receive a full 24 Megabit service, whilst the majority receive around 10 Megabits or below.

On Fibre broadband, all subscribers will receive 100 Megabit access speeds†, allowing simultaneous use of high-speed, bandwidth intensive applications.

Take the scenario of the kids streaming a high definition video from Youtube. Even on an ADSL2+ service, this may take a while to buffer and possibly slow down other users in the house trying to load a webpage or download email.

With Fibre, the kids could be streaming that hi-def youtube video , whilst dad enjoys a high-definition movie streaming to his IPTV enabled unit in the lounge, and mum uploads large files to the tax office from the computer in the study, all happening at the same time, without lag, without interruption.

Prices for the trial start at $69.00 per month, which includes free equipment and installation.

Pricing Schedule

Speed Price
8 Megabits $69.00
30 Megabits $89.00
100 Megabits $129.00

ONE is accepting expressions of interest from residents in the point cook community who wish to check availability and enroll in the FTTH trial.
