Fibre to the Home Trial

ONE is making bold new moves into next generation broadband services by setting up a trial of super-fast Fibre-to-the-home broadband services, which will take place starting May this year in Point Cook, Victoria.
Through a partnership with Telstra, ONE will deliver high-speed internet over Optical Fibre cables that will be installed in select housing estates within the suburb.
It is estimated that up to 1600 homes in Point Cook will be eligible to take part in the trial, with broadband access speeds of 100 Megabits down and 5 Megabits up.
At that speed, Fibre is capable of speeds more than four times faster than existing ADSL2+, however the distinct advantage that fibre has over ADSL broadband is signal loss and electro-magnetic interference which is a major factor in ADSL technology is almost non-existent in Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Broadband. On an ADSL2+ service, only a minority of subscribers will ever receive a full 24 Megabit service, whilst the majority receive around 10 Megabits or below.
On Fibre broadband, all subscribers will receive 100 Megabit access speeds†, allowing simultaneous use of high-speed, bandwidth intensive applications.
Take the scenario of the kids streaming a high definition video from Youtube. Even on an ADSL2+ service, this may take a while to buffer and possibly slow down other users in the house trying to load a webpage or download email.
With Fibre, the kids could be streaming that hi-def youtube video , whilst dad enjoys a high-definition movie streaming to his IPTV enabled unit in the lounge, and mum uploads large files to the tax office from the computer in the study, all happening at the same time, without lag, without interruption.
Prices for the trial start at $69.00 per month, which includes free equipment and installation.
Pricing Schedule
| Speed | Price |
| 8 Megabits | $69.00 |
| 30 Megabits | $89.00 |
| 100 Megabits | $129.00 |
ONE is accepting expressions of interest from residents in the point cook community who wish to check availability and enroll in the FTTH trial.

The speeds quoted in this article are the theoretical maximum link speeds, and actual data transmission rates achievable over the internet will be subject to various factors such as selected plan type, customer equipment configuration, ISP backhaul, contention, peering , inter-connects, destination server capabilities and other factors. Huawei E1762
ONE, a provider of Fixed Line Broadband and Mobile Broadband is proud to announce our support of the new Huawei E1762 Mobile Broadband USB modem.
This latest device from the popular and fast-growing Huawei hardware manufacturer replaces the previous E169 and E160 Devices.
The features of the E1762 include:
- Native Intel Mac OSX 10.3 to 10.6 Snow Leopard support (the E169 supported 10.3 – 10.5, and only worked in Snow Leaopard via a hack)
- Support for Windows 2000 through to Windows 7
- Support for GPRS, WCDMA, and 3G HSDPA mobile technologies
The device is technically capable of speeds up to 7.6 Megabits per second download speed, however the current network only supports up to a maximum of 3.6Mbps, and the device is completely happy at that speed.
The modem, which is in the form of a USB Key, is small enough to fit in your pocket and carry with you on the go. It has an opening on the side allowing insertion of an external antenna for improved signal in rural areas, as well as an expandable Micros SD memory slot, turning the modem into an external storage device as well.
Also built into the software is a notification system that receives network notices from the ISP, such as download usage, which is sent via SMS and pops up into the application as a message. This is handy when your internet plan has a set limit of data per month. Previously this feature was only available to Windows users, but is also now available to Mac OSX users as well.
The Huawei E1762 Modem is bundled in all new Mobile Broadband plans from ONE.
