iPad Launch in Australia
Tommorow, Friday 28th May 2010 marks the official launch of the Apple iPad in Australia.
The iPad has already proved a massive success in the USA, where the iPad shifted over a million units in less than a month, and where stock shortages have caused delays of it’s launch in other regions, including Australia.
The Apple iPad is a Tablet device, enabling users to browse the web, check emails, play games, read E-books downloaded from the iTunes store, play music, watch videos and more.
The iPad features a large 25cm touch-screen for interaction with the device and display, and comes in two models including a wi-fi only model, and a 3G+WiFi model. The 3G model enables users to connect to a mobile broadband network to download data when they’re out and about. Both models come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB varieties.
Users of the iPhone or iPod touch will feel at home with the iPad’s familiar interface, but will delight at the extra screen real-estate and a more enjoyable viewing experience on the larger screen. The iPad also offers a unique gaming experience with use of the in-built accelerometer, where users will move and rotate the iPad to perform in-game actions, like steering a car.
The iPad weighs in at 730 grams (3G+WiFi models) and is the perfect portable entertainment device that you can carry with you, but won’t have to squint at the screen.
The iPad launches tomorrow, and will be available through authorised retailers and the Apple Online Store.
ONE currently does not stock Apple iPhone or iPad devices, however watch this space, as ONE will soon be introducing iPad 3G Data plans, which comes with a unique micro-SIM Card that is required by the iPad 3G model to connect to mobile broadband.

Fibre to the Home Trial

ONE is making bold new moves into next generation broadband services by setting up a trial of super-fast Fibre-to-the-home broadband services, which will take place starting May this year in Point Cook, Victoria.
Through a partnership with Telstra, ONE will deliver high-speed internet over Optical Fibre cables that will be installed in select housing estates within the suburb.
It is estimated that up to 1600 homes in Point Cook will be eligible to take part in the trial, with broadband access speeds of 100 Megabits down and 5 Megabits up.
At that speed, Fibre is capable of speeds more than four times faster than existing ADSL2+, however the distinct advantage that fibre has over ADSL broadband is signal loss and electro-magnetic interference which is a major factor in ADSL technology is almost non-existent in Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Broadband. On an ADSL2+ service, only a minority of subscribers will ever receive a full 24 Megabit service, whilst the majority receive around 10 Megabits or below.
On Fibre broadband, all subscribers will receive 100 Megabit access speeds†, allowing simultaneous use of high-speed, bandwidth intensive applications.
Take the scenario of the kids streaming a high definition video from Youtube. Even on an ADSL2+ service, this may take a while to buffer and possibly slow down other users in the house trying to load a webpage or download email.
With Fibre, the kids could be streaming that hi-def youtube video , whilst dad enjoys a high-definition movie streaming to his IPTV enabled unit in the lounge, and mum uploads large files to the tax office from the computer in the study, all happening at the same time, without lag, without interruption.
Prices for the trial start at $69.00 per month, which includes free equipment and installation.
Pricing Schedule
| Speed | Price |
| 8 Megabits | $69.00 |
| 30 Megabits | $89.00 |
| 100 Megabits | $129.00 |
ONE is accepting expressions of interest from residents in the point cook community who wish to check availability and enroll in the FTTH trial.

The speeds quoted in this article are the theoretical maximum link speeds, and actual data transmission rates achievable over the internet will be subject to various factors such as selected plan type, customer equipment configuration, ISP backhaul, contention, peering , inter-connects, destination server capabilities and other factors.
